HISTORY
A Historical Note of the Parish
Ashok Nagar is by far the biggest single unit of housing undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. It is being developed as a well planned satellite township with Housing to suit all sections of the society. As this area officially came under the jurisdiction of two parishes that is Kodambakkam and the Little Mount being far flung from both the above parishes the Catholics of this area found it very difficult to practise their religion regularly by attending services in the church.it was given to the late rev.fr.Irudayaswami of Fatima Church, Kodambakkam to acquire a land for the church in the year 1965 with the material aid so generously given by the Arch Bishop R.Arulappa of Madras-Mylapore. Arch Bishop Arulappa declared the Parish open on 7th june 1971 and handed the same over to the Capuchin Fathers. Thus the local Ashok Nagar Parish came into being, sliced as it were from farflung areas of Kodambakkam and Little Mount Parishes. The Capuchins with their Provincial House in Coimbatore lost no time to take charge of the parish.
Rev Fr.Provincial appointed Fr.Jesudas as the First Parish Priest of St.Mathias Church, Ashok Nagar.As Fr.Jesudas had an uncompleted assignment Rev.fr.Montfort OFM Cap., was sent to Ashok Nagar. The Parish then consisted only of a land measuring 18 grounds without any structure but with about 3000 catholics spread within an area of approximately 10 kilometres in radius. The enthusiasm among the Catholics of this parish to buy place of worship prompted the Archbishop once again to have a place of worship prompted the Archbishop once again to come to the aid of his people and this time he gave them a hall which served as a place of worship.The parish priest residing with the neighbouring parish priest of Kodambakkam moved from there to this new hall.At this time Fr.Montfort left the Parish in the hands of Fr.Jesudas OFM Cap., and proceeded to take charge of his new assignment in Malaysia.
Fr.Jesudas formed a Parish Council of no fewer than 60 people both young and old.The first major task which fell to its lot was to find out the means to build a modest structure for worship. The foundation stone for St.Mathias Church was blessed and laid by His Grace Rt.Rev.R.Arulappa, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore on 29th April 1973.With the best co-operation of the parishioners church fund was raised through fancy fete, entertainments, donations and by releasing a souvenir.In a record time the church was completed.It was solemnly blessed by His Grace Archbishop Arulappa on 22nd December 1974.
Now that the Ashok Nagar Parish is functioning, it is gratifying to see the crowds participating in all church activities.As it stands the parish has got three sub-stations: Virugambakkam, Rani - Annan Nagar(Aminjikarai) and Muhthirulandi Colony.There are about 5000 parishioners residing in and around and far beyond Ashok Nagar.There are two Capuchin Priests from June 1975 onwards to look after the needs of the Parishioners.From 13th June one of our Capuchin Brothers becomes a member of the small community at Ashok Nagar.

On 2nd October 1977, our sub-stations at Aminjikarai and Muhthirulandi colony comprising, Nelson Manickam Road, Thiruvalluvarpuram, Perianpathai are handed over to St.Luke's Parish, Anna Nagar, a new parish run by Paulist Fathers.
